Very interesting post at http://www.computermajors.com/10-hot-computer-jobs

When someone mentions “hot careers”, what do you think of? If something in the IT (Information Technology) field pops into mind, that’s not surprising. The U.S. Dept of Labor (DoL) and Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), between them, seem to indicate that the top ten fastest growing, high-demand careers between 2000-2014 show a significant number of IT-related jobs.

But many people go into computer science, get a degree, then realize that they don’t really want a traditional computer job as a business programmer, network administrator, database administrator, analyst, tech support person and so on.

These traditional IT careers will probably stay in-demand for the foreseeable future, but don’t forget the alternatives. There are many enjoyable and high-demand applied careers that involve computer skills. And new and interesting variations of computer jobs emerge every year.

The 10 Careers mentioned are the following:

1. Environmental Simulations Developer
2. Video Game Developer
3. Bioinformatics Simulations Modeling
4. 3D Animation Technician
5. Internet Entrepreneur
6. Medical Modeling Systems Developer and Technician
7. Digital Film Production Assistant and Technician
8. Website Network Manager / Administrator
9. Training Software Developer
10. Visual and Audio Content Producers

Google Business Referral Representative

Google Plain Logo

From the Business Referral Representative Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Why should I become a Google Business Referral Representative?

Joining the Google Local Business Referrals (LBR) program is a great way to earn some money while connecting people to the businesses in your neighborhood. The information you collect could be seen by millions of people who use Google every day. And you’ll be helping the businesses you refer attract new customers while also making it easier for people in your community to find the products and services they’re searching for.

  2. What will I be doing as a representative?

As a Google Business Referral Representative, you’ll visit local businesses to collect information (such as hours of operation, types of payment accepted, etc.) for Google Maps, and tell them about Google Maps and Google AdWords. You’ll also take a few digital photos of the business that will appear on the Google Maps listing along with the business information. After the visit, you submit the business’ info and photo(s) to Google through your Local Business Referrals Center, and we’ll pay you up to $10 for each listing that is approved by Google and verified by the business.

All you need to be a successful Business Referral Representative is a passion for helping local businesses succeed, a love for the Internet (some knowledge of Google is great, too), and access to a computer and a digital camera.

  3. How much will I be paid? How will I be paid?

You can earn up to $10 for each approved, verified referral you submit. This includes $2 when a business referral is approved by Google; and $8 when an approved business verifies that the information you submitted is accurate. Referrals are approved by Google based on the completeness and quality of data supplied by representatives. Businesses verify their information either by sending us a response postcard or verifying their information online.

As long as your earnings total at least $25 a month, you’ll receive a monthly check.

A Guide to Hiring Programmers: The High Cost of Low Quality

Programmer Expressions
From the article:
“At one point we were talking about hiring programmers, specifically Perl programmers.

We agreed on the following:

  • Finding good programmers is hard in any language. And that a good programmer can be as effective as 5-10 average programmers.
  • Average pay rates between equivalent programmers are out of sync and are based more on the language used than the skill of the programmer.
  • You don’t need to hire an expert in language X, you can and should look for expert programmers that are willing to learn language X. An expert can easily cross over from being a novice in any language in a matter of a few weeks.
  • You should seriously consider allowing your expert developers to telecommute full-time. Restricting your search to programmers who live in your area or are willing to move limits the talent you can acquire. Arguments regarding “face time”, productivity, etc. can easily be nullified when you look at how some of the largest and most successful Open Source projects such as Linux, Apache, and Firefox are developed by individuals rarely living in the same time zone or even country.
  • We love Perl and think it’s a great language that you graduate to after you have been forced to use less agile languages such as Java, C/C++/C#, etc. Not necessarily a first language you get your feet wet with and then move onto a *cough* “real” language.”

Leopard Screen

InfoWorld has an article that goes something like this: “OS X’s commercial credentials recently got a major boost from the Open Group. Thanks to the efforts of Apple’s OS boss Kevin Van Vechten and his team, Leopard has cleared all of the hurdles required to attain UNIX 03 certification. That places Apple in elite company. Only Sun, IBM and HP are certified, so OS X turns the Big Three into the Big Four.”
